"Vergiss es "... / "Forget it..."

Manchmal ist es wie verhext ;-) !. Da will ich Dinge erledigen und es will nichts klappen. Und dann zieht sich das "ganze Pech" auch in die Nähecke. So geschehen in den letzten Tagen. Wahrscheinlich war ich auch unkonzentriert, denn als ich ein paar Babytäschchen nähen wollte (ich habe das Muster schon mehrmals genäht), da sah ich, nachdem schon Reissverschluss und Innenfutter genäht waren, dass das Stoffmuster auf dem Kopf und verkehrt war. Beim zweiten Versuch war dann der neu gekaufte Reissverschluss defekt. Also alles neu beginnen!


I must have been jinxed for the last few days ;-) !. I wanted to get various things done......but almost everything failed. And the "bad luck" also continued in my sewing corner. Probably I was unconcentrated. When I wanted to sew a few baby pouches (the pattern is known and I did it various times) I only saw that the fabric was sewn upside down and on the wrong side, when the zipper and lining were already finished. My second go showed a defect zipper after having completely  finished the pouch. This meant to start everything once more!

Um die bereits gesteppten Stoffstücke noch zu retten, schnitt ich die Reissverschlüsse heraus (hatte keine Lust alles aufzutrennen) und versuchte mit den noch verbleibenden, zerschnittenen Stoffen eine neue  Täschchenform herzustellen.

In order to save the already quilted fabric I cut the zipper out (I didn't feel like ripping) and tried to form a new pouch with the remaining fabric.

Und das sind nun die beiden unkonventionellen Täschchen, die jetzt doch gebraucht werden können. Sie haben eine halbrunde, dreieckige Form.

And here are the two unconventional pouches, which now can be used. They are half round and have a triangular form.

Von einer lieben Nähkollegin habe ich kürzlich Kaffe Fassett Stoffe erhalten für die Herzkissenaktion. Nochmals herzlichen Dank Mirka! Dann habe ich noch schöne und z.T. ungebrauchte Bettwäsche im Elternhaus gefunden, die ebenfalls dafür genutzt werden kann.

From a quiltfriend I recently received nice Kaffe Fassett fabrics meant for heart pillows for breast cancer patients. Once more many thanks to you, Mirka! Then I also found nice and almost new bedlinen in the former house of my parents. This fabric I can also use for this purpose.

Positiv empfunden habe ich, dass meine seit Dezember gestrickten Babypullis für Peru  endlich zusammengenäht wurden und nächste Woche die weite Reise antreten können. Einige UFOs weniger :-) !!

Positive too... I've a few UFOs finished :-) ! My babysweaters I've been knitting since December now are finally stitched together and will go to Peru next week.

Patchwork Ferien / Holiday with patchwork

Seit einer Woche hat mich der Alltag wieder. Die Patchworkferien in Gais (Appenzell) habe ich sehr genossen. Nicht nur des Nähens wegen, sondern weil es auch viel Zeit zum Austauschen unter den Patchworkbegeisterten gab (auch eine 90 jährige Dame war dabei!),  ich einiges dazu lernen konnte....

I am back at home and  to everyday life.  I enjoyed very much the week I spent in Gais (Appenzell) together with twelve other quilters (there even was a 90 years old lady!) We had much fun together, discussing and also learning from each other...

 ...das Kulinarische auch nicht zu kurz kam und generell eine lockere und fröhliche Ferienstimmung herrschte.

and the culinary part  was perfect too. To be short, it really was a good holiday.

Der Kursraum war gross und hell, bot jedem viel Platz und hatte eine tolle Aussicht (siehe erstes Bild!).

The room we had for sewing was spacious, comfortable and with a great view (see the very  first picture).

Sandwichen für einmal nicht am Boden sondern auf einem grossen Tisch, das fand ich wunderbar (dieser schöne Quilt gehört aber nicht mir).

How comfortable to baste the sandwich on a big table and not as I usually do on the floor (this beautiful quilt however isn't mine).

Mein "Lasagnequilt" ist fertig zum Quilten und wurde aus einer hellen Batik Jelly Roll gemacht. Damit das Aneinanderfügen der Streifen nicht so langweilig wurde, habe ich Dreiecke an die jeweiligen Streifen genäht.

My "Lasagne Quilt" is ready for quilting, made of a bright batik jelly roll. In order not to get bored with just sewing all the stripes together, each stripe first got a little triangle.

Der Quilt  "Römische Fliesen" war eigentlich mein Hauptprojekt, das aus vielen Stoffresten entstand. Das Top ist auch bereit zum Quilten.

My main project was the "Roman Tile" which consists of a lot of scraps.  This top too is ready for quilting.

Immer wieder interessant zu sehen, wie das gleiche Muster mit anderen Stoffen wirkt.
Nebst den zwei fertig genähten Tops gab es auch noch kleinere Arbeiten, wie Täschchen und ein Bild (üben in textiler Oberflächengestaltung mit diversen Stoffstücken, Spitzen Organza, Fimoplast, Vliesofix etc.) die ich mit nach Hause nehmen konnte.

It always is interesting to see how the same pattern can have a different look and effect. Apart from the two finished tops I still made a few little things as pouches and a picture  (trying out various techniques and materials such as fimoplast vliesofix, organza and lacy).

Verlockende Aussichten / Tempting prospects

Ins neue Jahr nehme ich - wie könnte es anders sein - auch Altlasten, sprich UFO's mit.  Was soll's, irgendwann werden auch diese fertig. In den Tagen zwischen Weihnachten und Neujahr hatte ich Zeit Neues auszuprobieren. Arrowhead Blocks können, wie ich auf verschiedenen websites gesehen habe auch auf verschiedene Art und Weise genäht werden. In 2013 I'll still have some UFO's from this year. But I don't mind. I'm sure, they will be finished some day. Between Christmas and New Year's Eve I had time to try out new things. As I saw in various blogs, arrowhead blocks can be sewn in different ways. I however followed this tutorial http://quiltingwithkaren.blogspot.ch/2012/01/arrowhead-block-tutorial.html 

Flying geese versetzt, eigentlich als Bordüre gedacht, werde ich nun mit Mittelstreifen zu einem Quilt machen.

These displaced flying geese, which orignally were meant for a border, I'll now use together with additional stripes for a quilt.

Ein schwarz-weisser Sternen-Quilt ist ebenfalls am Entstehen.

Black and white fabrics are cut and ready for sewing. I'd like to make a star quilt.  

Und zwei zu Weihnachten eingetroffene Hefte mit vielversprechendem Titel (ob die Zeitangabe wohl stimmt?) liegen zur Umsetzung bereit, aber....

Two booklets which arrived just in time for Christmas and with a quite promising heading (I wonder whether the time indication is realistic!) are waiting to be used, but....

zuerst werden Taschen mit Stoffen und die Nähmaschine eingepackt, denn nächsten Sonntag geht es  mit anderen Frauen aus der ganzen Schweiz in eine Patchwork-Ferienwoche. Freue mich darauf und bin gespannt, was wir Neues lernen.

first I have to do my luggage, to pack in fabric and my sewing machine, as I'll go for a patchwork-holiday next Sunday with other women from Switzerland. I'm looking forward to it and wondering what we are going to learn.

Von Glöckchen, Sternchen usw. / About small bells, stars etcetera

Durch das Jahr hindurch mag ich eher helle Pastellfarben und natürlich viel weiss. Aber an Weihnachten darf es ganz klassisch kräftig rot, grün usw. sein. Winzige Glöcklein in rot und grün sind genäht worden und schmücken bereits ein paar Weihnachtsgeschenke.

During the year I rather prefer light or pastell colors with a lot of white. But for Christimas I stick to the classical red, green and cold. Small bells in red and green have been sewn and now already decorate various Christmas gifts.

Sterne sollten weihnachtliche Glas- oder Flaschenuntersetzer werden, sind aber noch zu gross geraten. Ich versuche sie jetzt kleiner zu machen.

For glass- or bottle coaster I wanted to sew some stars. But these here are still a little too big. So  I am now going to make them smaller. 

 Tatütas auch auf eine andere schnelle Art gemacht (Anleitung fand ich hier) sind bereits bei den "Verschnupften".

I also made some other and quick little bags for handkerchiefs  (here I found the tutorial) and these have already gone to friends who have caught a cold.

"Clamshell-Täschchen" sah ich irgendwo im Net, aber die Schablonen dafür sind in der Schweiz erst ab nächstem Jahr erhältlich (habe in Japan bei Clover nachgefragt). Da ich nicht warten und diese kleinen Klapptäschchen machen wollte, probierte ich aus dickem Schablonenplastik die Form zu schneiden und habe diese mit Vlies und Stoff umhüllt und von Hand die drei Teile zusammengenäht.

Somewhere I discovered nice clamshell cases. However, Clover is going to sell these templates in Switzerland only next year ( I directly asked in Japan). But I didn't want to wait so long and so I tried to make the form out of template plastic, covered them with fabric and some thin batting and sewed all three pieces together by hand.

Es war zwar eine etwas knifflige Arbeit, aber sie sehen dem Original doch schon ähnlich.

It  was a fiddly job though, but they do look quite similar to the original one.

Kleine Täschchen in allen Formen sind auch genäht worden. Und dank dem neuenTeflonfüsschen ist das Nähen auf plastifiziertem Stoff auch kein Kunststück mehr (nochmals Danke für den guten Tipp an Hannelore!).

I also made some new little pouches in different forms. With the appreciated tipp of Hannelore to use a special teflon presser foot it's an easy job now to work with coated fabric.

Frust und Freude / Frustration and fun

Meine neue Schablone ist bereits in regem Gebrauch. Ein Adventskranz in den traditionellen Weihnachtsfarben ist entstanden. Auf diese Weise kann ich meinen Weihnachtsstoffvorrat endlich etwas verkleinern (den ich mir am Anfang meiner "Quiltkarriere" zulegte).

I made another go with my new selfmade template. An Advent wreath in the traditional colours came out. With projects like this one I can finally use my Christmas fabrics which I bought  years ago when I started with patchwork and quilting.

Es ging wirklich  schnell mit Ausschneiden, dann Block drehen und Nähen. Es fehlt jetzt bloss noch die Rückseite.

It was quite a fast project, easy to cut, to move the blocks and then to sew. Now I still have to do the backside.

Frustriert bin ich von meinem Handquilten. Ich wollte endlich den Flanellquilt für meine Schwester fertig machen und dachte, dies wäre eine Gelegenheit für's Konturenquilten von Hand.

My handquilting turned out to be a great frustration . I finally wanted to finish the flannel quilt for my sister, thinking that quilting by hand, was the  perfect way for these blocks.

Aber die Decke ist  anscheinend viel zu dick (beide Seiten Flanell und dazu noch ein dickes Vlies), denn ich schaffe es einfach nicht alle drei Lagen regelmässig zusammenzufassen. Jeder zweite Stich ist auf der Rückseite nicht sichtbar. Ich glaube, ich werde alles wieder auftrennen und mich an die Nähmaschine setzen.

Probably the quilt is too thick (back and top both flannel with a rather thick batting), as I can hardly stitch through all three layers. Every second stitch isn't visible on the back. I think, I'll unstitch everything and continue with my sewing machine.

Die neuen Bücher die per Post kamen, liessen mich meinen Frust etwas vergessen.

Two new books in the mail made me forget my frustration for a while.

Und auch gefreut habe ich mich, als vier weitere, frisch gestrickte Babypullover wieder die Reise nach Peru antreten konnten.

And I was very glad too that four new finished baby sweaters could be sent to Peru again.

Selbst ist die Frau / Self do, self have

Pinwheels als Muster gefallen mir für Kinder- bzw. Babyquilts. Eine raffinierte und schnelle Methode diese zuzuschneiden, habe ich im Internet mit einer Schablone gesehen für 5" Quadrate. Leider habe ich bis heute diese kleine Schablone hier noch nicht auffindig gemacht (die grosse für 10" Quadrate hingegen ist auch hier käuflich). Natürlich kann man diese Pinwheels auch ohne Schablone nähen, aber mich hat die schnelle und einfache Art fasziniert wie Blöcke zugeschnitten und genäht werden können.

I like pinwheels for children and baby quilts. A clever and quick method to make them with a template,  I found in the web. It's a tool for charms and/or 5" squares. Unfortunately I couldn't find this little template here (the big one, however, for 10" squares is available). It's possible, of course, to make pinwheels without template, but I was fascinated by the quick and simple technique how blocks can be cut and sewn.

Da ich keine grosse Schablone wollte und mir das Porto  (mehr als der doppelte Kaufpreis) aus den USA zu teuer war für dieses kleine Stück Plexiglas, habe ich mir selbst eine gemacht und aus einem Stück Polystyrol ein Template geschnitten, das wunderbar für 6" Quadrate passt (genähte 5, 5").

I didn't want to have a big template and the shipping costs from the USA (more than  twice the price of the little tool) for the small one were too expensive, and therefore  I made one myself. I cut a piece of polystyrol, which perfectly matches  6" squares (sewed 5,5").

Mit ein paar Reststoffen habe ich es ausprobiert und es funktioniert. Der Weg ist also frei für weitere Blöcke.

I just had a go with "my" new template and it worked. Well, I'll probably continue sewing these blocks.

Der Abfall ist gering, da ich die ca. 3" Quadrate  weiterverwenden kann.

There is little waste only as I can use the few 3" squares left for another project.

Apropos Scraps. Ich habe beim Aufräumen in meiner Nähecke in einer Schachtel angefangene Blocks mit diversen blauen, unregelmässig grossen Quadraten gefunden. Diese muss ich wohl vor ca. vier Jahren mal angefangen haben, ein vergessenes UFO....leider nicht mein einziges ;-) !

Apropos scraps. In my sewing room I accidentally found a box with blocks  of blue squares in different sizes. I guess, I've started to sew them about four years ago, a lost UFO....unfortunately not my only one ;-) !

Mehr Zeit / More time

Genau vor einer Woche, sah der Blick aus dem Fenster meiner Nähecke sehr winterlich aus. Inzwischen ist der Schnee zwar wieder verschwunden, aber es ist definitiv Winter....und damit habe ich auch mehr Zeit für's Nähen :-) !

Exactly one week ago I could see a snow covered landscape when looking out of my window. In the meantime, however, snow has gone, but it definitively is winter now....and this allows me to spend more time in my sewing room :-) !

Mit  niedlichen Panels und unifarbenen Stoffumrandungen sowie ohne grosses Quilten (nur stitch in the ditch) gab es rasch zwei kleine Deckchen für neugeborene Zwillingsmädchen. Das Geschenk ist  bereits bei den Babys.

Nice panels and some basics gave two quick little babyquilts for new born twin girls. I only quilted them stitch in the ditch. The gift already is at the home of the twins.

Ebenfalls im Kurs bei Dörte Bach habe ich mich mit verschiedenen Oberflächengestaltungsarten (und den diversen Vliesen) etwas vertraut gemacht. Thema war Natur.

In another class, as well by Dörte Bach, we made some experiments with surface design. Our subject was "nature".

Die verschiedenen Blätter sollten eigentlich ein kleines Büchlein geben. Aber ich werde die Blätter lose aufbewahren, sozusagen als Anschauungsmaterial und Hilfestellung, falls ich wieder mal Lust habe zu experimentieren.

The various pieces of fabric we finished, should have given the pages of a booklet. But for me, I choose to keep them loose, so I can take them as an example in case I'd like  to have another go in this field.
 

Ein weiterer Block ist für den Mistery Block des Monats Oktober von Cotton Color  entstanden. Mir gefällt das schlichte Muster und die Stoffwahl (nicht von mir).

Another block for the Mistery Block of October, organized by Cotton Color (my favourite quilt shop) is finished. I like this simple pattern and the choice of fabrics (by Cotton Color).

Jetzt bin ich gerade am Zusammennähen der Stoffherzen, die ich diese Woche für Brustkrebspatientinnen in den Spital bringen werde.

Actually I am sewing  some hearts for breast cancer patients they need at the hospital this week.
