2 Sarongs = 1 Quilt

A few years ago one of my sons brought two sarongs from Bali which he and his girlfriend  were wearing when visiting temples. I stored these two fabrics thinking, that they would be perfect for a wedding quilt in case they should marry.

When the young people finally announced their wedding for this May, I joyously started to plan a quilt. But how should I combine the two sarongs? The pattern of the two fabrics was identic but the colors didn't match so well.

I tried to combine various additional new batik fabrics, looked, rejected and finally found two colors which were suitable.

But only when I had finished sewing some blocks, I realized that the chosen additional fabrics indeed were quite perfect together.

Due to the fabric pattern which I didn't want to cut, there wasn't a great choice of block variation.

So I cut rectangles and made borders with fabrics in a contrast color. I was quite happy when I finally saw that all the rectangles were perfectly matching and the whole design got in some way a "calm touch". The final size of the quilt is around 1,8 x 2,3 m.

With a dark border in the same color as the binding of the rectangles, a light blue cotton fabric as backing, quilted by machine and hand, I succeeded to finish the quilt just in time for the wedding day. But I have to admit that I was sweating blood when washing the quilt in the machine for the first time. I feared the very dark blue batik fabric would still bleed but luckily this wasn't the case.

Another quilt too, had been finally finished last month and given to my sister. I started to sew three years ago and it should have been a gift for the 60th birthday. But I always postponed the quilting. It was my first  go (and probably my last one too) in handquilting. Two layers of flanel and a thick batting....., it definitely was no picnic for a beginner in handquilting and with the handicap of sore  and some stiff fingers due to the polyarthrose. But I did it! Now I can start again with other projects :-) !
