Actually my sister and I are busy clearing the house of our parents. This work often brings memories back of our childhood. Our grandmother also had her flat in the house and therefore we quite often spent our time with her. In her bedroom she had something that attracted us very much.....

It was her sewing machine. An old model and not motor-driven. Here we made our first attempts and experiments with sewing when we were little girls.

Our grandma first had to help us as our legs were too short for starting the machine. I remember that I also tried to sew whilst standing as I wanted to use the sewing machine without any help. The electrical one of our mother was a taboo for us children.

In the bedroom of my grandma we found other treasures too whose value I only started to appreciate some years ago: linen with elaborately decorated braids and monograms (here E.Z.).

Today I'm admiring these delicate embroideries and crochet work on fine linen. By the way they were used as cushion covers for the bed.

I wonder how long it then took to finish such beautiful braids.

In the past it was quite usual that a young woman made the bedlinen and other things for her future household by herself. A fact which my generation is hardly able to relate to !

Some of these treasures I took home with me. Once upon a time I'll certainly create something with them...a few ideas are in my head already....

Now let's cover again this beautiful sewing-machine and put it away. At home my own one is waiting for me to get started. It hadn't been used for quite a while. A lot of UFOs are waiting too to get finally finished....

Yes, memories. I too learned on grandmother's Singer machine, like so many of us.
AntwortenLöschenYour Pfaff is in such a lovely condition! I hope you are keeping it. And the beautiful linen!
I am sorry to hear about your mother, it is never easy.
You have a very nice blog too, I will come back soon.
Thank you for visiting my blog and your kind comment, you are very welcome to come back
any time.
Thank you for visiting my blog and taking the time to leave a kind comment. I understand the mixed feelings of sorting your memories :-) The singer sewing maching reminded me of my own, the first machine I ever owned :-) Best wishes to you.

Haerzlich...Trudi.
I too learned on my grandma's machine. The handwork you found is wonderful! Yet another thing I would love to learn to do in this lifetime! Thanks for sharing!

Stuttgart, Nellingen, Ansbach often return in flashbacks...
I avoid this type of blogs, however, now I see that if there is a connection between the material and the reader, great JOY, comes out of it.
Congratulations for an excellent post.
